The United States government announces plans to build an orbital construction platform that will serve to develop a strategic Anti-Missile Shield that would protect the United States from nuclear attack by ICBMs. The effort receives wide popular support despite criticisms about the cost of the program and the continued undermining of the long standing deterrence doctrine of the Cold War. 2022: The US establishes an orbital construction platform, and a feasible program to transfer materials into space via shuttle and assemble the complex network of satellites. China attempts similar plans, but ultimately is behind in the race and the still-developing country successfully puts personnel in space but fails several attempts throughout the ‘20s to transfer materials into space the same way the US is able to.
